A Visit To The Cedars

On a visit to The Cedars you will experience an Australian cultural treasure and one of the world’s few fully preserved historic artists’ homes and studios containing the original working and living spaces of both Hans and Nora Heysen and their family.

  • Historic House: Explore the house where Hans lived with his family. The house is filled with personal items, original furnishings, and artworks that provide a glimpse into the Heysen family life and work.

  • Hans Heysen's Studio: Visit Hans' studio, where he created many of his famous works. The studio remains much as it was during his lifetime, with easels, paints, and unfinished works.

  • Nora Heysen's Studio: This delightful heritage-listed space showcases the works and collections of Nora Heysen. Nora was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize as well as the first Australian female war artist.

  • Gardens and Grounds: The property includes the beautiful Artist Garden as well as the wider property of magnificent gums and native flora and fauna. Take the Artist's Walk to see and learn some of Hans' favourite parts of the property and painting spots.

  • Art Collection: View a significant collection of original Hans and Nora Heysens' works, including landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.

  • The Cedars Cafe & Tea Rooms: Relax in the beautifully restored and renovated original laundry and tack rooms. Sit by the fire or out under the vines overlooking the Artist's Garden and enjoy a Heysen tea or local coffee with your morning/afternoon tea or lunch.

  • Guided Tours: Guided tours provide in-depth information about the Heysen family, their art, and the history of The Cedars.
